Wherever we are on this 2019 Independence Day, and whatever we have planned, let's remember our freedom is NOT FREE. If we don't fight for it, we can and will lose it; history warns us of that.
While memories have grown dim in this country, there are those in other nations who never forget their deliverance by our U.S. military from great oppression. I have seen the tears in the eyes of those who, now elderly, remember all too well the horrors of war. As children in WWII, they watched their families, towns and lives destroyed by war. They lived in fear. Millions of them. And it was never going to end. Husbands, fathers, sons, brothers (usually the men) gunned down mercilessly just for being civilians in the wrong places. UNTIL the day our tanks rolled into their towns. And the people went crazy with joy. I wish all could talk to them.
I have also seen foreigners join in our national anthem with the same zeal they hold for their own, laying flowers at the tombs of our fallen American soldiers, and honoring our flag. They never seem to finish erecting and revisiting Memorials and organizing re-enactments of key events. For them it wasn't that long ago. Let us not make their past our future. It's all about REMEMBERING! Please do so on the 4th of July, 2019!
I was privileged to be sitting in the back seat of this restored American jeep two summers ago, revisiting the trail of one of General Patton's divisions in Europe, not far from where my ancestors were themselves delivered. What a treat! Very sobering considering the forgetfulness our great nation suffers from!
We must fight back and restore what we are too rapidly losing. It's everyone's job!
